Zebbug
Population: 1600
Nearby: Marsalforn, Gharb, Ghasri
This beautiful village is perched on a hill to the north of Gozo. Zebbug has once been known for its abundance of olive trees. In fact, Zebbug means “Olives”. It is also famous for lace making, weaving and woollen blankets.
The village of Zebbug shares a history that dates back to the Bronze Age (1500 – 700 BC). On a flat – topped hill (Ta’ Kuljat) next to the village, a wide scatter of pottery sherds were found all datable to that period.
If you walk through the quiet village of Zebbug, one could not help but notice the number of street niches apart from the exotic views over the coast, land and sea. The best known niche is that of Il-Madonna Omm tal-Hniena, known as tac-Cicri.
The magnificent church situated in the middle of the square and dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, was built in 1690. The church is literally covered in onyx stone. The high altar, choir and the baptistery are all sculptured out of onyx. The feast is held on the forth Sunday of August.
