Sannat
Population: 1500
Nearby: Xewkija, Xlendi
The village of Sannat is situated on the south of Gozo. The name Sannat is believed to be derived from an Arab-Greek family that moved from Sicily to Gozo.
As soon as you reach this village, one may easily notice a huge square with the Parish Chruch in the middle. The church was built in 1781 and is dedicated to St. Margaret of Antioch. This village celebrates the feast on the third week of July.
Sannat is also popular for the sheer cliffs of Ta’ Cenc that drops isometers down to sea. The scenery is breathtaking! Archaeologists also found remains of a prehistoric temple – Imramma Temple. It is made up of a sort of an oval court. Cart ruts in the stone are also visible, in which their meaning are still questioned today. Ta’ Cenc is also famous for the wild life species.
Walking along a country road through the valley of Hanzira, that separates Sannat from the village of Xewkija, one arrives to a very small inlet of Mgarr ix-Xini. The latter is reputed to be used by the Knights. Today it is one of the smallest and prettiest bays on the island. Although it is not very popular with swimmers, Mgarr ix-Xini is one of the best places for diving. An attraction site for divers lies a few hundred meters from shore. There is a wreck of once Gozo-Malta ferry boat that rests on the sea-bed.
Sannat people are also famous for lace-making and one can still easily see elderly people working on their door-step, doing lace.
