Many are surprised by the awesome nearby island of Comino (Kemmuna), where the waters in the lagoon are a clean, deep, inviting blue. This very small island between the Malta-Gozo channel, was named after a herb ‘Cumin’ that grew on the island.
Surprisingly enough, only four residents live on this marvellous island. In olden days, Comino was used by the Knights of Malta as a hunting ground. In the 16th and the 17th Centuries, Comino also served as an imprisonment place for errant knights who were sentenced to the lonely and dangerous task of manning the St. Mary’s Tower. The latter is a prominent building on this island since it is one of the fewest buildings. It was built together with other towers across Malta and Gozo to defend its people from the enemy.
There is also a small chapel dedicated to the Sacred Family upon its return from Egypt. It is located above the beautiful bay of Santa Marija. On the other hand, just above San Niklaw Bay lies ‘Comino Hotel’ – the only hotel on the island. It has two private beaches, a swimming pool, tennis courts and some holiday bungalows for those who prefer more private areas.
The two most popular bays are the Blue Lagoon and the Santa Marija Bay. The Blue Lagoon is a long narrow bay where the sand is pure white and the water is crystal blue. This lagoon is very popular by boats who spends the day in this marvel. The Blue Lagoon is surrounded by carved rock formations on both sides. On the other hand, Santa Marija Bay is a very tranquil bay which is not visited as much as the Blue Lagoon. It is a good swimming area for families with children as the bay offers some trees that give shelter from the sun.
There is not much to do on Comino except relax, sunbath, swim or go walking and explore around this outstanding island. However, it is sure worth a visit since it is a carefree, car-free and the perfect retreat!
